I am currently studying Korean language at a university KLI in Korea. I have a friend who can set me up with a well paid job so I am considering droping out and staying in Korea to work for a year instead. But my student visa expires in December if I don’t prolong my course. What happens if I overstay my visa?

This is a bad idea! On a student visa in Korea you can work part-time after 6 months with your school's permission (which you wont get if you drop out). You are not allowed to work fulltime on a student visa, and if you drop out your school will inform the migration authorities who will cancel your visa. So unless you can secure a work visa you would be in breach of your student visa.
I strongly advice not to overstay your visa or work illegally on a student visa. I cannot speak for the actions of the Korean authorities but if you purposefully overstay and abuse the rules of your visa there is a big risk that you will be deported and banned from future visas to Korea. You might also get prosecuted and fined.
Abusing your student visa does not only affect you. If your school has several students who "disappear" on a student visa, the school might be punished or even banned from issuing student visa support documents. And if several students of the same nationality abuse their visas it will be harder for future students of the same nationality to get a student visa for Korea. This is why we cannot help all nationalities to apply to Korean Universities.
