Here you can read more about:

What is a study abroad consultant?

Studying abroad opens doors to new cultures, languages, and educational opportunities. It gives you the chance to spice up your CV, experience life in another country and possibly move there. However, the study abroad process can be daunting for someone who has never done it before, that is why study abroad consultants are there to help you. They are proffessionals who have worked in the study abroad industry for many years and often have personal study abroad experience.

Services offered by study abroad consultants

The exact services offered varies but most study abroad consultants can help you with:

  • University and Course Selection: Consultants help you to select the right school and course, aligning with their academic interests and career aspirations. They have extensive knowledge about global education systems and institutions, providing insights that go beyond what's available on university websites.
  • Application Process: They assist you with the application process, ensuring all requirements are met. This could include help with writing personal statements, preparing portfolios, and meeting specific university criteria.
  • Visa Assistance: Navigating visa procedures can be daunting. Consultants provide up-to-date information on visa requirements and some assist in preparing visa applications, thus increasing the chances of approval.
  • Scholarships and Financial Aid: They can also guide students in finding scholarships, grants, and financial aid options, making education abroad more accessible.

How to choose a study abroad consultant

Selecting a reliable consultant is crucial. Prospective students should look for consultants with a proven track record, positive reviews, and a transparent approach. It's advisable to choose consultants who are officially recognized by various international universities and industry organisations.

Some things you should look out for when choosing a consultant is:

  • Do they work with the school you are interested in? Otherwise it is better to look for other options, or apply on your own. We and our partners can help you with thousands of schools all over the world. And we have a lot of information on how you can apply on your own if we don't have a suitable partner.
  • Do they charge a fee for their service? If you want help to study at the highest ranking universities in the world most study abroad consultants charge a fee, but otherwise you have to ask yourself whether it is worth it or not. DreamStudies never charge you anything, our help is always free of charge for students.
  • Do they try to stress you into making a decision? If the consultant try to stress you to make a decision and repeatedly calls and mails you trying to force you to take action they might not have your best interest in mind, unless it is very close to the application deadline. Avoid consultants that are too pushy. DreamStudies replies to all your questions and puts you in touch with suitable partners when requested, but we do not push you or contact you when you have not asked for it.

Student housing abroad

Living well in a safe but affordable accommodation is an integral part of your study abroad experience. Students usually live in on campus residences, shared apartments or studio apartments on or off campus, or in host families. Many schools offer some accommodation options for their students, alternatively you can arrange your own accommodation.

We have accommodation partners that offers good student housing, often at discounted rates, at many popular locations around the world. Read more about student housing when studying abroad.

Financing your studies abroad

We are not a financial aid instititution. We cannot pay for your education or help you to study abroad for free (except EU-students to some schools in northern Europe). You will need to have some money on your own to study abroad, cover your living costs and get a student visa.

However, you can apply for DreamStudies’ scholarship to our partner schools. This consists of four scholarships with a total value of 5000 Euro that are handed out once a year (the application deadline is December 15). We also have many guaranteed scholarships and discounts to our partner schools, some over $20000/year.

We cannot actively help you with scholarships to schools that we don’t work with but in our scholarship guide you can find advice on where and how you can apply for external scholarships. To get scholarships and financial aid you will need to spend time on research and good applications.

Student visas

When you study abroad for a longer period of time you usually need a student visa. The main exception is EU-students studying within EU. Some of the study abroad consultants that we partner with can help you with the visa application. For students from Europe and the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, Japan etc it is usually easy to get a student visa, but for students from other countries in the southern hemisphere it can be a good idea to get help from a local visa agency.

You can find step by step instructions on how to apply in our student visa guides.
