The most popular schools in the world

DreamStudies have just received brand new stats from CSN about where Swedish students studied abroad in 2016. Surprisingly a Polish school was the most popular. See the top 10 schools:

Medical Education in Eastern Europe

One reason to study abroad is if you don’t get accepted to the program that you want to study in your home country. A prominent example of this is medical training where more and more Swedish students have turned to medical schools in Eastern Europe in recent years. In 2016, the Medical University of Gdansk in Poland was the most popular school in the world for Swedes with close to 500 Swedish students according to CSN-statistics. Among the top ten schools there are two more schools providing medical training: Riga Stradins University in Latvia and Wroclaw Medical University in Poland. Further down the list there are more medical schools in Lithuania, Romania and Poland. In total about 1,500 Swedes studied medicine in Eastern Europe during 2016.

The US is still the most popular country

The most popular country for Swedish study abroad students is still the United States. In 2016 nearly 6000 Swedes studied in the US with student aid from CSN. While the medicine students in East Europe focused on the program they wanted to study the majority of the Swedish students to the US focus more on location and experience. They often take one or two semesters as study abroad students. Community Colleges close to the beach in California top the list year after year.

Students choose Scotland over England

The UK is the second most popular country for Swedish students with nearly 5600 CSN-students in 2016. One would think that most students would choose London and England, but the fact is that the three most popular schools in the UK are all located in Scotland. It is the University of Glasgow, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Aberdeen! Out of the 10 most popular schools in the UK 5 are located in Scotland and 5 in London. The main reason for this is most likely that tuition fees in recent years have increased a lot in the UK while EU citizens studying in Scotland can get their tuition paid by the SAAS –Student Awards Agency for Scotland. Thus students don’t need to take big CSN-loans to pay for tuition when they study in Scotland.
